In an unexpected backyard encounter, a pit bull named Chester from Sussex County, New Jersey, faced off with a porcupine. The confrontation, however, did not turn out well for the dog. Despite its aggressive advance on the porcupine, the dog ended up severely injured, with numerous quills embedded deep into its body. To give Chester a fighting chance, a hefty down payment of $12,000 was required for the surgical procedure. DeGennaro, unable to shoulder the huge upfront cost, was faced with a heart-wrenching decision. The vet clinic, however, decided to move forward with the procedure, hoping to save Chester. Unfortunately, during the surgery, Chester succumbed to the injuries inflicted by the porcupine.
Now, the grief of losing her beloved pet is compounded for DeGennaro by the looming debt. She lamented, “I genuinely believed Chester would pull through. He needed that surgery.”
